When you deploy software updates and hotfixes to computers in your organization by using Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or by using the Microsoft Update Web site, some Microsoft Office updates are not successfully installed on certain client computers.
In this situation, the user on the client computer may receive the following message in the Automatic Updates dialog box:
Updates were unable to be successfully installed
Additionally, if a user tries to repair Microsoft Office on the affected computer, that user may receive the following error message:
Error 1327. Invalid Drive driveLetter:\
Additionally, when you view your history on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site, you see error 0x52F listed.
When you try to update a Microsoft Office 2003 program by using the Microsoft Update Web site or by using AutoUpdate, you receive the following error message:
Similarly, when you try to update a Microsoft Office 2003 program by using the Microsoft Office Download Center or by using Microsoft Update, you receive an error message that resembles one the following error messages:
A required installation file filename.CAB could not be found.
Original Installation Source Required: If you installed program name from a CD, please insert your CD. If you installed program name over your computer network, please browse to the installation source on your network. Once you have located your installation source, click OK.
This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
Office is installed on the client computer together with an Office local installation source.
The path of that local installation source is no longer valid.
For example, this issue may occur if the following conditions are true, in the order in which they appear:
Office is installed on a client computer that has two hard disk drives or partitions that are named drive C and drive D, respectively.
The Office Setup program detects that drive D has more space available than does drive C.
The Office Setup program copies the Office files to a hidden local installation source folder on drive D.
Drive D is later removed, or the drive letter is changed to a different drive letter.
The Automatic Updates feature contacts a computer that is running Windows Server Update Services to obtain Office updates.
To resolve this issue, disable the local installation source for Microsoft Office. To do this, follow these steps:
Obtain the Local Installation Source Tool. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Extract the LisTool.exe file and the LisTool.chm file to a particular location on the computer.
Run the LisTool.exe command together with the /q option to remove the local installation source. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, change to the directory to which you extracted the LISTool.exe file. For example, if you extracted the LISTool.exe file to the C:\LisTool folder, type cd\listool, and then press ENTER.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
listool.exe /q remove=all
Note If you try to run the graphical user interface version of the LISTool.exe program, you may receive the following error message::
An error occurred and the feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?
Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit the command prompt.
Let the Automatic Updates feature apply the Office updates to the computer.
Re-enable the local installation source for Microsoft Office.
Note Although you can run Office without the local installation source, we recommend that you enable the local installation source. If you do not use the local installation source, you may be prompted for the original Office CD or installation source when you install Office updates.
To enable the local installation source, follow these steps:
Quit all running Office programs.
Start the Local Installation Source Tool. To do this, click Start, click Run, type path\listool in the Open box, and then click OK.
In this command, replace path with the path of the LisTool.exe file that you extracted in step 2.
In the Microsoft Office 2003 Local Installation Source Tool dialog box, click Enable LIS, and then click Next.
Follow the remaining steps in the Local Installation Source Tool to enable the local installation source for your Office product.
Note You will require the Office installation CD or access to the compressed Office installation source files in order to enable the local installation source.
When you deploy Microsoft Office 2003 from the CD or from a compressed CD image on the network, the Setup program creates a local installation source in a hidden folder on each user's computer. Windows Installer uses the local installation source to install Office. The local installation source remains available so that users can repair Office, can install new features, and can apply updates without being prompted for a CD.
The Office 2003 Setup program creates the local installation source on users' computers based on the options that are set by the administrator and on the amount of available hard disk space that Setup detects on the default drive. You can use the Local Installation Source Tool (LISTool.exe) to manage the local installation source.
