BitLocker can't encrypt drives because of service crashes in svchost.exe process in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

This article describes an issue in which BitLocker can't encrypt the drive and the service crashes in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. An update is available to fix this issue. Before you install this update, see the Prerequisites section.

Symptoms

The BitLocker service crashes and you can't turn on BitLocker on a computer if the following conditions are true:

Known issues in this update

  • After you install update 3133977 on a Windows 7 x64-based system that includes an ASUS-based main board, the system does not start, and it generates a Secure Boot error on the ASUS BIOS screen. This problem occurs because ASUS allowed the main board to enable the Secure Boot process even though Windows 7 does not support this feature.
