Office 2010 activation troubleshooter for Software Licensing Service errors when you try to activate Office 2010, such as: “Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated”

Symptoms

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article describes a method for recovery from errors that end-users encounter when they try to activate a volume client installation of Microsoft Office 2010, and this installation is trying to activate against a Key Management Server (KMS). The volume end-users receive the following error messages and codes in Office 2010 dialog boxes when they try to run a background activation of Office 2010.

0xC004F056The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated using the Key Management Service (KMS).
0xC004F039The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. The Key Management Service (KMS) is not enabled.
0xC004F074The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.
0xC004F042The Software Licensing Service determined that the specified Key Management Service (KMS) cannot be used.

Resolution

To resolve this issue if you are a volume end-user, and you encounter this error, contact your system administrator, and let them know which error you are receiving.

If you are a volume administrator, you can resolve this issue by restarting the KMS server.
