  • Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 3.0

Symptoms

Microsoft Host Integration Server does not generate tracing files for any 32-bit processes that are running on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Note SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) is a 32-bit process. When you start a package in debug mode, BIDS generates a 32-bit process that runs the package. Therefore, the 32-bit process for a SQL Server Integration Service project may encounter this issue when BIDS is in debug mode.

Cause

This issue occurs because the SysWOW32 processes cannot read the registry values that are used by the tracing tools in Host Integration Server.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft website:

http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=supportNote The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you install this hotfix.

More information about this hotfix package

To resolve this issue for Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 3.0, follow these steps on a computer that is running Windows Vista or a later version of Windows Vista:

  1. Apply this hotfix package.

  2. For the applications that use the data provider, assign the Read, Modify, and Write permissions to the tracing directory for the administrators, user, or service accounts that run the applications.

Note If this step is not performed, 0 KB tracing files are usually generated.

  3. Start the application of the 32-bit process by using an administrator account.

Note If this step is not performed, no tracing files are usually generated.

Note You do not have to follow these steps if you run Microsoft Host Integration Server 2009 or Microsoft Host Integration Server 2010. In these versions of Host Integration Server, Host Integration Server runtime and the Administrator groups have the required permissions to start tracing. The OLE DB Provider for DB2 does not setup these permissions. Therefore, user accounts that start applications do not have the permissions to write the tracing logs, and additional steps are necessary to assign the permissions.
