This article explains how to use a text box to simulate a vertical text flip for a "tent" page, that is, a page that can be folded "tent style" and have readable text on both sides of the fold.

Summary

To create a tent page, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup.

  2. On the Paper Size tab, under Orientation, click Landscape.

  3. Click OK.

  4. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Text Box tool.

  5. Draw a text box that represents one side of the tent.

  6. Enter the text that you want in the text box.

  7. With the text box selected, click Text Direction on the Format menu, and then select the first orientation, so that the text reads from bottom to top. Click OK.

  8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to create the text for the second side of the tent, but select the opposite text direction.

Method 2

  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup.

  2. On the Paper Size tab, under Orientation, click Landscape.

  3. Click OK.

  4. On the Table menu, click Draw Table.

  5. In the Line Style list, select the border that you want, click the Draw Table tool, draw a one-cell table on the right side of the paper, and then position the table where you want the text to show below the fold.

  6. With the table selected, click Text Direction on the Format menu, and then select the first orientation, so that the text reads from bottom to top. Click OK, and then type the text that you want in the table.

  7. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to create a table for the second side of the tent, but use the left side of the paper and select the opposite text direction.

Method 3

  1. On the Drawing toolbar, click Insert WordArt. In the WordArt Gallery, select the style that you want, and then click OK.

  2. In the Edit WordArt Text dialog box, select the font and font size that you want, type the text that you want in the Text box, and then click OK.

  3. On the Drawing toolbar, click Draw, point to Rotate or Flip, and then click Rotate Left twice.

  4. Click the word art to select it, and then position it toward the top of the page where it will be below the fold.

  5. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the text that you want on the other side of the tent. Position the text toward the bottom of the page where it will be below the fold.
