INTRODUCTION

Microsoft has released an update for the Microsoft Outlook Social Connector (OSC). This article lists the changes that are in the update.

Resolution

When you apply this update to the OSC, the storage location for the social network provider settings has changed. Therefore, the previous social network provider settings are not migrated. Additionally, when Outlook requests information about recipients from a social network provider, the recipients’ email addresses are hashed. In this situation, only the hash is sent to the social network provider.

Profile specific settings

The social network provider settings from version 1.0 of the OSC are not migrated during the version 1.1 upgrade process. The storage location for these settings has changed. The settings are now stored on a per-Outlook profile basis. This change enables distinct social network settings and connections for each Outlook profile.

Social network settings are stored under the following profile-specific registry subkey:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\<ProfileName>\{SocialNetworkGuid}Note OSC generates the GUID for the social network (SocialNetworkGuid) dynamically.

On-demand hashed email addresses

When you view an email message, the OSC may ask the social network provider for information about everyone in the To and the Cc lines. This occurs if on-demand user lookup is implemented by that social network provider. The email addresses of those people are hashed before they are sent to the social network provider to prevent disclosure of email addresses. To support on-demand user lookups, the social network providers must support hashed email addresses as outlined in the OSC SDK.
