Introduction

This article describes an update for Hyper-V Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 systems (KB 977238). This update includes fixes for issues between BPA and new features that were introduced in Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This update also includes fixes for issues in BPA.

This update applies to Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM-based computers and to Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2-based computers, both with and without SP1.

This update fixes the following issue when you run Hyper-V BPA against a computer that is running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1:

BPA incorrectly reports that the server core installation is recommended for servers that are running Hyper-V.

This update fixes the following issues when you run Hyper-V BPA against a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has the Hyper-V role installed or against a Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2-based computer:

Issue 1

When you have at least one existing file share on the server, BPA incorrectly warns you that Hyper-V should be the only enabled role. After you install this update, the File Server role feature of the File Services role is excluded from the scan. The reason for exclusion is that a file share is required for several backup applications or management applications to be created. We strongly recommend that you limit file sharing use to those applications. The computer should not be used as a generic file server.

Issue 2

When you have error-correcting RAM installed on the server, Hyper-V BPA may incorrectly report that error-correcting RAM is not installed.

This update fixes the following issues when you run Hyper-V BPA against a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computer that has the Hyper-V role installed or against a Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computer:

Issue 1

When you configure a virtual machine by using the dynamic memory, Hyper-V BPA may incorrectly report that minimum memory settings are configured incorrectly.

Issue 2

When you have the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host role service installed on the server, Hyper-V BPA incorrectly warns that Hyper-V should be the only enabled role.

Issue 3

Hyper-V BPA may incorrectly report that the number of virtual processors that are being used must not exceed the supported maximum number of virtual processors if you have only Windows 7-based virtual machines that are running on the server.
