Not sure if this is the right fix? We've added this issue to our memory dump diagnostic which can confirm.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You enable smart card logon on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You deploy the Smartcard Removal Behavior: Force Logoff Group Policy setting in a network environment.

  • You put the computer into hibernation (S4).

  • You remove the smart card from the computer during hibernation.

In this scenario, the computer may stop responding, and hibernation fails.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in the Winlogon.exe process. The smart card desktop lock event causes the hibernation event to be lost. Therefore, hibernation does not finish.

Resolution
