Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You insert a PCI Express (PCI-E) switch into a PCI-E slot on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You insert a PCI-E solid-state drive into a slot on the switch.

Note After you perform this action, both the storage controller and the drive are displayed in Device Manager.

  • You hot-swap the drive between different slots on the switch.

In this scenario, the drive is not displayed in Device Manager. Only the storage controller is displayed in Device Manager.

Notes

  • If you remove the drive from a slot, and then reinsert the drive into the same slot, both the controller and the drive are displayed in Device Manager.

  • If you insert a new drive into any of the slots on the switch, it is displayed in Device Manager correctly.

  • If you restart the computer, the drive is displayed in Device Manager correctly.

  • This issue also occurs on PCI-E devices that have a unique serial number and that use line-based interrupts.

Cause

This issue occurs because the same device instance ID is assigned to the drive when the drive is moved to a new slot. Therefore, Windows uses an incorrect interrupt line for the drive.

Windows uses the device instance ID as a registry key to cache the routing information (such as the interrupt line number) for PCI-E devices. The interrupt line number is determined by the slot number. On old PCI-E devices, the PCI slot number is part of the device instance ID. Therefore, a different device instance ID is generated when a device is moved to a new slot. However, new PCI-E devices support a unique serial number that is used as the device instance ID.

Resolution

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.1.760
    0.16xxx

    Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, extremely important issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
