Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install the Terminal Services Gateway role service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Or, you install the Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) role service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • You configure some RemoteApp applications to be accessed through the Gateway.

  • You configure the Gateway so that it can resolve the Service records (SRV records) of domain controllers in a remote domain.

  • You configure the Gateway so that it cannot connect to these domain controllers by using firewall policies.

In this scenario, all users from the remote domain cannot start any RemoteApp applications through the Gateway.

Notes

  • Users may be unable to establish  sessions through the Gateway because of this issue.

  • Users may experience a delay of several seconds (such as 40 to 50 seconds) before they successfully establish sessions through the Gateway because of this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an authentication time-out issue that occurs when the Gateway expects a response from the Network Policy Server (NPS) during authentication. The time-out issue occurs because the NPS cannot validate the MS_ATTRIBUTE_MACHINE_NAME attribute in the authentication request.

Resolution

For Windows Server 2012 and above installing the hotfix is not required only the addition of the registry key is needed. For Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 the hotfix and the registry key are required.

After you install the hotfix, the following registry entry is created under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Terminal Server Gateway registry subkey:

Name: SkipMachineNameAttribute
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1When the registry entry exists with a value of 1, the Gateway does not include the MS_ATTRIBUTE_MACHINE_NAME attribute in the authentication request.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=supportNote The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Windows Server 2008 file information notes

Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
