Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You configure routing group connectors between Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 routing groups and Exchange Server 2010 Hub Transport servers.

  • The Hub Transport servers are in different Active Directory sites.

  • You try to use the Routing Log Viewer tool to open routing log files on the Hub transport servers.

In this scenario, you cannot open the routing log files. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchemaValidationException: Error: The element 'SourceOrTargetServers' has incomplete content. List of possible elements expected: 'String'.
at Microsoft.Exchange.Transport.RoutingTableLog.Parser.Parser.ValidateLog(XPathDocument doc, String schemaVersion)
at Microsoft.Exchange.Transport.RoutingTableLog.Parser.Parser.Parse(XPathDocument document)
at Microsoft.Exchange.Transport.RoutingTableLog.Viewer.MainForm.ParseLogBackgroundWorker_DoWork(Object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e)
at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.WorkerThreadStart(Object argument)

Cause

This issue occurs because the Exchange Server 2010 server incorrectly handles an empty list, which generates the invalid SourceOrTargetServers tag in the routing log file when it creates a bridgehead list for a routing group connector.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2685289 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2

Workaround

To work around this issue, manually remove the SourceOrTargetServers tag in the routing log file.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
