Warning: The retired, out-of-support Internet Explorer 11 desktop application has been permanently disabled through a Microsoft Edge update on certain versions of Windows 10. For more information, see Internet Explorer 11 desktop app retirement FAQ.

Symptoms

You use the Distributed File System (DFS) Management snap-in (dfsmgmt.msc) or dfsradmin.exe to create a DFS Replication diagnostic report. Then, you view the report in Internet Explorer 10. However, the report is not displayed correctly. The section headers and some other fields show very small text that is unreadable in the report.

For example, notice the small, unreadable text that is indicated by the blue arrows in the following screen shot.

This problem occurs in Internet Explorer 10 if the HTML report is created by using dfsmgmt.msc or dfsradmin.exe on the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows 7

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows Server 2003 R2

  • Windows XP

If the report is created by using dfsmgmt.msc or dfsradmin.exe on a Windows Server 2012-based or Windows 8-based computer, and it's then opened in Internet Explorer 10, the report is displayed correctly.

Cause

Changes were made in Internet Explorer 10 that required updates in DFS Replication report generation for the reports to be displayed correctly.

Workaround

To work around this issue, enable Internet Explorer 5 quirks mode in Internet Explorer 10. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Internet Explorer 10, press the F12 key to open the Developer Tools console.

  2. Click Document Mode Quirks, and then click Internet Explorer 5 quirks.

  3. Press the F12 key again to close the Developer Tools console.

After you enable Internet Explorer 5 quirks, the pages are displayed correctly.

More information

Reports that are created by using the Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 versions of dfsmgmt.msc and dfsradmin.exe are displayed correctly in Internet Explorer 10. These reports are displayed correctly because, by default, these reports contain a metadata tag to use Internet Explorer 5 quirks mode. Earlier operating system versions of dfsmgmt.msc and dfsradmin.exe do not set this tag when reports are generated.

Alternatively, you can set Internet Explorer 10 to open all web pages in Compatibility View by using the Compatibility View Settings menu. However, we do not recommend this alternative.
