Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

Symptoms

Assume that you try to install one of the following cumulative update packages to an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 when the performance counters for SQL Server Agent are being used or locked:

For SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

  • Cumulative update package 7

  • Cumulative update package 8

  • Cumulative update package 9

For SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

  • Cumulative update package 2

  • Cumulative update package 3

In this situation, the installation fails. Additionally, you receive the following error messages in the Summary.txt and Detail.txt files that are found in the SQL Server setup log folder:

Summary.txt

Final result: The patch installer has failed to update the shared features. To determine the reason for failure, review the log files.
Exit code (Decimal): -2058354685
Exit facility code: 1360
Exit error code: 3

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error that occurs with the naming convention of the performance counter when it copies the performance counter file from the BINN folder to the System32 folder or the Syswow64 folder.

Note This issue is a regression from the fix that is introduced in hotfix 2708726.For more information about hotfix 2708726, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
