Resolution

Installing Windows Update is a different experience in each user interface in Winodws 8. The classic user interface will allow you to scan and install optional and important updates, while the new user interface will only scan for important updates. For information on how to scan for and install Windows Updates in Windows 8, follow the steps for the User Interface you're using:

Windows 8 Classic User Interface

  1. Swipe from the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (or if you're using a mouse, move your pointer to the bottom left-hand corner of the screen), then tap and hold or right-click, then tap or click Control Panel.

  2. Tap or click System and Security, and then tap or click Check for updates.

  3. All optional and important updates will be available for install. If you have updates to install, tap or click Install Updates.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest Windows Updates.


Windows 8 New User Interface


  1. Swipe from the upper-right hand corner of the screen (or if you're using a mouse, move your pointer to the upper-right hand corner of the screen), and then tap or click Search.

  2. In the search bar type Windows Update, tap or click Settings, and then tap or click Check for updates.

    • Note: Tapping or clicking Check for updates will only scan for important Windows Updates. If you want to install optional updates, tap or click Install optional updates.

  3. Tap or click Check for updates now. If important updates are availabe, tap or click Install Updates. If optional updates are available, tap or click Get more info. Note: Tapping or clicking Get more info will direct you to the classic user interface to install them.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest Windows Updates.
