Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows Embedded Compact 7-based image on a device.

  • The image includes the following components:

    • Web Server (HTTPD) (SYSGEN_HTTPD)

    • SOAP Toolkit Server (SYSGEN_SOAPTK_SERVER)

  • The device hosts a SOAP web service that is used to transfer data to a client.

  • A SOAP client requests a large amount of data from the web service. For example, the size of the data is more than 1 megabyte (MB).

In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:

Application servicesd.exe encountered a serious problem and must shut down.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a linked list that is dynamically created by the SOAP server and that manages the data transfer is released by using a recursive algorithm. During the execution of the recursive algorithm, a "User Stack Overflow" exception may occur after a large amount of data is transferred to the client.
