Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 fix release.

Symptoms

Assume that you apply Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 on an instance of SQL Server 2012, or you have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 on your computer. When you try to run a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query, the query fails and you receive an error message that resembles the following:

The MDX function failed because the coordinate for the 'AttributeName' attribute contains a set.

Each new cumulative update for SQL Server contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous cumulative update. Check out the latest cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

To reproduce this issue, run the following query:with member measures.test as 1

SELECT
{
measures.test,
[Measures].[Internet Sales Amount]
}
ON COLUMNS

,NON EMPTY
[Product].[Model Name].[Model Name].members*
[Product].[size].[size].members

ON ROWS
FROM
(
SELECT
{[Product].[Product Line].&[M]} ON COLUMNS
FROM [Adventure Works]
)
WHERE
(
[Product].[Product Line].[All Products]
) Based on the previously mentioned query, the issue is more likely to occur when the following conditions are true:

  • The query runs in cold cache, or runs after the data cache is clear after a ClearCache XMLA command.

  • The MDX query selects more than one measure, and at least one of the measures is a base measure from a measure group. In the previously mentioned query, [Measures].[Internet Sales Amount] comes from a measure group.

  • The query has a subselect of a single member.

  • The ALL slice is above the granularity of an attribute in the axis. For example, the All slice is selected for the [Product].[Product Line] attribute when there is a [Product].[Model Name] attribute in the axis.

  • The axis needs to cross join some other attributes from the dimension. In the previously mentioned query, there is more than one attribute in the row axis.
