Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:

Windows Internet Explorer 9 is set as the default browser on a computer.

You use a shortcut or the Run box to open a download link for a file.

The Download Manager window appears, and the file is downloaded. Then, Windows tries to open the file by using the associated application.
In this scenario, the Download Manager window does not close automatically.
Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to Microsoft Update.
