INTRODUCTION

Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008 supports new kinds of hardware and emerging hardware standards. This service pack includes all the updates that have been delivered since Service Pack 1, and it simplifies deployment for consumers, for developers, and for IT professionals.

Note This article also applies to Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Standard and to Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Premium.

1.     After January 12, 2016, only the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates. For example, customers using Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9, or Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 SP1 should migrate to Internet Explorer 11 to continue receiving security updates and technical support.

What you may want to know before you install SP2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008

Before you install SP2, note the following:

  • The installation process might take an hour or more. Therefore, if you are installing SP2 on a portable computer, make sure that you plug in the power cord.

  • During the installation, your computer will restart several times. Therefore, save your work, and exit all open programs before you begin.

  • After you install SP2, a sound device or some other hardware device may no longer work. If this behavior occurs, just install an updated driver for the device. To do this for a sound device, follow the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

      You may want to add a link to this article in your Bookmarks or Favorites folder in case you need it after the installation is completed.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is a prerequisite for installing SP2 in Windows Vista. If you use Windows Update or the Automatic Update feature in Windows Vista, you will not be offered the option to install SP2 until you first install SP1.

Note Windows Server 2008 does not have a similar requirement. Windows Server 2008 SP2 is the first service pack available for this product.

Removing the prerelease version of SP2

The prerelease version of SP2 is time-limited software. You must remove the prerelease version of the service pack before you install the final version of the service pack. Also, this software will no longer operate after May 1, 2010. You must remove the prerelease version of SP2 before that date.

To remove the prerelease version of SP2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start windows icon, copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER:

    appwiz.cpl

  2. Click View installed updates.

  3. Click Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465), and then click Uninstall.

  4. Follow the instructions to complete the removal process.
