Writing a message
- On the navigation bar at the top of your screen, move your cursor to Mail and More.
- When your cursor is over the Mail and More icon, you’ll see an arrow appear just under the text.
- Click the arrow and select Write a Message.
- After selecting Write a Message, a blank email message will pop up, waiting for you to fill it with thoughts, emotions, greetings and even funny pictures.
There are two ways to add address to your e-mail:
- Type in the address(es) in the To field.
- Select a name from the All Contacts field to the right by selecting the check box next to the name of the person you would like to send the e-mail to.
- Once you've completed your message, click Send Message.
Some other things you might want to know:
- Want to send a copy of your message to someone? No problem. Simply follow the steps listed above describing how to address your email. This time however, add the address to the Cc (‘carbon copy’) field. Want to send Frank a copy of your message to Sam without Jordan knowing? Click More and then Show Bcc (blind carbon copy). In the Bcc box, type the address(es) of the people you want to send a copy of the message to.
- Got something on your mind you want to share with Tom, but you’re not online? No worries. Just type out your message and it will be moved to your Outbox where it will be sent the next time you’re online.
- So you want to send a message to your entire family, including your aunt Irma who sent you that snowman birdhouse for your 10th birthday? Great. As MSN Email detects you have a reputation for not sending junk email, you’ll be able to address your messages to more and more people at once, little by little, until you reach 300 addresses. Separate multiple addresses with semicolons, like this: “firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com.”
Attaching a file to a messageAttaching a file to your e-mail, whether it's a picture or your college paper, further expands the world of communicating electronically. The steps below will show you how to attach almost anything to your messages.
- On your navigation bar, move your cursor over the Mail & More icon. Doing so will show an arrow under the text, like so:
- Click on the arrow, then click on Write a Message. On the message toolbar, click Attach File (look for the paperclip icon).
- In the Insert Attachment dialog box, locate and select the file you want to attach and then click OK.
Things to Remember:
- If you want to send multiple files but don’t want to send multiple e-mails, simply press the CTRL key while selecting your files to select multiple files.
- Sometimes files may be too big to send. This is especially true for high-quality pictures and files like Powerpoint presentations. If this is the case, MSN will ask you to remove one or more files. To remove an attachment, right-click on the attachment and then select Remove. If worst comes to worst, you’ll need send a few more messages.
Creating a signatureOne of the best ways to customize your messages is by using a signature. While an e-mail signature can come in many varieties, at it's core is just one thing: your name. Signatures make your messages stand out and give them a more polished look. Here's how you can automatically add a signature to all of your outgoing messages:
- Click the Help & Settings menu and then click Settings.
- On the left side, click E-Mail, then Writing E-Mail, followed by Signature.
- Type your signature information in the box and choose Every new message you write. If you want your signature on every message you send, whether you reply to or forward a message, check both boxes.
Things to Remember:
- Your signature will appear as plain text in the Type your signature box if you created it in Microsoft Outlook.com. To format the text to your liking, use HTML tags such as </b> for example. If you created a signature using rich text (colors, fonts, etc.) in Microsoft Outlook.com using rich text formatting, your signature will appear in the Type your signature box with HTML tags.
- If you only want your signature on select e-mails, click Insert Signature on the More menu found at the top of the e-mail composition box:
Accessing your MSN e-mail without using the MSN Explorer softwareJust because you’re not at home doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your e-mails. You can stay in touch from any computer, smartphone or tablet that has Internet access.
You can access your MSN e-mail anywhere by using Internet Explorer or another browser or by using any Mail app. Here's how:
- From any computer, start Internet Explorer (it’ll be the blue lowercase ‘e’ with a gold halo around the letter and is typically found on your desktop or in the Start menu) and type http://www.outlook.com into the address bar and press Enter.
- When prompted, enter your MSN member ID (your e-mail address) in the following format: firstname.lastname@example.org. Then enter your password. Remember, your password is case sensitive, meaning if your password contains capital letters, you must capitalize those letters for your password to be accepted.
- After entering your sign-in credentials, either click Sign-In or press Enter. Once logged in, click on the Mail & More icon at the top of your screen to access your messages.
