You cannot use Office Communicator or Lync to send or receive files

Symptoms

When you try to send or receive a file by using Microsoft Office Communicator or Microsoft Lync clients in Microsoft Office 365 dedicated, you receive one or more error messages that resemble the following:
  • The file could not be sent because the connection is blocked. A firewall running on your computer or on the network may be the cause. Contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider.
  • The file could not be sent because the connection is blocked. A firewall running on your computer or on the network may be the cause. Contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider.
  • The file "test.txt" was sent to you. Communicator or Lync declined this file because the sender does not support encryption.
  • Your message or invitation was not delivered, possibly because it contains a hyperlink or other content that the system administrator has blocked.
  • Transfer time out. Cannot send file name to remote user. This may be due to firewall restrictions.

Cause

This issue occurs when one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • The remote user does not reside on the same corporate network as the user who is sending or receiving the file. File transfers between users on the corporate network and users on the Internet are blocked at the firewall.
  • For security reasons, the transfer of some file types is not permitted. Among these are files that have the following file name extensions.
    Blocked file name extensions
.ade .adp .app .asp .bas .bat .cer .chm .cmd .com .cpl .crt .csh .exe .fxp .grp .hlp .hta .inf .ins

.isp .its .js .jse .ksh .lnk .mad .maf .mag .mam .maq .mar .mas .mat .mau .mav .maw .mda

.mdb .mde .mdt .mdw .mdz .msc .msi .msp .mst .ocx .ops .pcd .php .pif .pl .pnp .prf .prg .pst .reg

.scf .scr .sct .shb .shs .tmp .url .vb .vbe .vbs .vsd .vsmacros .vss .vst .vsw .ws .wsc .wsf .wsh
Note Review the service description for the most up-to-date list of blocked file name extensions.
  • If you are using a virtual machine (VM), you may be unable to send or receive files because Network Address Translation (NAT) may block peer-to-peer (P2P) functions on the network. This behavior is by design.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do not send files that use blocked file name extensions, and make sure that you install the Office Communicator client or the Lync client on a physical computer.
