Word for Mac 2011 may not flag incorrect grammar

Symptoms

Incorrect grammar is not flagged (underlined) when you use the French version of Microsoft Word for Mac 2011.

For example, the following French phrase is not recognized as grammatically incorrect:
Jean mange les pomme

Cause

This issue can occur when the following conditions are true:
  • You are using a French version of Microsoft Word for Mac 2011.
  • The Mac computer is set to use the English keyboard layout.
Word for Mac 2011 uses the Match font to keyboard option. This option sets the language ID in Word to whichever language the Mac keyboard layout is using.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1

Set the Mac keyboard layout to French. If Word is set to use the Match font to keyboard option, Word uses the French keyboard layout of the computer.

Method 2

Turn off the Match font to keyboard option. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In a Word document, click Word.
  2. Click Preferences, and then under Authoring and Proofing Tools, click Edit.
  3. Under Editing options, click to clear the Match font to keyboard option.
  4. Click OK to close the window.
Select French as the default language in Word. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Tools, and then click Language.
  2. Select French from the list.
  3. Click Default, and then click Yes when you are prompted.
  4. Click OK to close the window.
