You have a standard publishing site and you have configured variations on it. In the source site you have created a "MyPages" library and in that library you add a field of type person lookup. You name the field Owner to designate the owner of the content.
A content editor creates a page on the root variation (English) and sets the Owner field to a valid user. The page is published and then published and propagated through the variation engine to a variated language (say, French) .
When the content editor visits the French site the page has been created however, the Owner field is empty.
Other custom fields (e.g. a managed metadata field) retain their values when published in the new language variation but fields of type SPUser do not.
