You have a standard Sharepoint installation and you have set domain based audiences on list items or web parts.
Your Active Directory domain is named contoso.com, NETBIOS name for your domain is CONTOSO. In your domain you have a security Group called AudienceTest. User1 is a member of the group while User 2 is not.
You set up SharePoint and one Shared Services Provider, you create a new import connection to populate the users and groups information from Active Directory. You run a full profile import. At the end, you verify that the group AudienceTest as well as User 1 and User 2 are imported.
You create a site collection and edit the default page and target the audience of the Announcements List View Web Part to AudienceTest group.
At this point, when visiting the page while logged on as User 1 you should see the Announcements List View Web , and while logged on as User 2 you should not see the said web part.
You perform the domain rename operation as per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738208(WS.10).aspx
The new FQDN domain name is Contoso_OLD.com, the NETBIOS Name remains the same CONTOSO
After the domain rename you run a full profile import to update the user information.
Checking the page, the List View Web Part is no longer displayed for the members of the AudienceTest group.
The audience is stored in the database as an LDAP String identifying the AD object ex: CN=AudienceTest;DC=CONTOSO;DC=Com
When performing the domain rename, the LDAP String becomes CN=AudienceTest;DC=CONTOSO_Old;DC=Com. However, the value does not match the one stored in the database and the webpart is not displayed.
