We test Surface devices so we can provide you with an estimate of how much battery life you might expect from your Surface device. For some products, testing is also conducted according to carrier specifications. The actual amount of battery life you experience can vary significantly and depends on which Surface device you have, how you use it, network and feature configuration, signal strength, and settings and other factors. In addition, users of Surface devices with lithium-ion batteries will also experience changes in battery life over time. Like all batteries, lithium-ion cells are consumables that age and deteriorate over time and with usage. For more information on battery care, see Caring for your Surface battery.

We currently use battery life test models that reflect activities typical to a Surface user. For some of our older devices, we used a local video playback battery life test.  Details for the testing can be found below by Surface device.

Up to 15.5 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage

Testing conducted by Microsoft in April 2020 using preproduction software and preproduction configurations of Surface Book 3. Testing consisted of full battery discharge with a mixture of active use and modern standby. The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150nits with Auto-Brightness disabled. Wi-Fi was connected to a network. 

Surface Book 3 15” Intel® Core™ i7, 256GB, 16 GB RAM connected to keyboard base

Up to  17.5 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage

Surface Duo 2 has all-day battery life

Local video playback: Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2021 using preproduction Surface Duo 2 units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge during local video playback on a single screen. Video playback consisted of a repeated 30-minute .mp4 file in 1080p at 24 fps. Device was connected to a cellular network and Wi-Fi was associated with a network. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi ‘ask to join’ and Adaptive Brightness were disabled, and screen was set to 100 nits. Battery life varies significantly with network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings, usage, and other factors. Battery has limited recharge cycles and cannot be replaced. 

Talk time: Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2021 using preproduction Surface Duo 2 units and software. All settings were default, and device was connected to a cellular network and Wi-Fi was enabled but not connected. Surface Duo 2 has all-day battery life:   Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2021 using preproduction Surface Duo 2 units and software over Wi-Fi with cellular associated to a network. Testing consisted of full battery discharge during active use scenarios and a power drain measurement in Suspend. The active use scenarios excluded cell calls and included both single screen and dual screen scenarios, consisting of (1) a web browsing test accessing 8 popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) productivity tests utilizing Microsoft Teams audio and video calls and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, (3) sending and receiving SMS text messages, and (4) streaming a video through the YouTube app. All settings were default except Adaptive Brightness was disabled, and screen was set to 150nits. Battery life varies significantly with network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings, usage and other factors. Battery has limited recharge cycles and cannot be replaced.

The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing eight popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150 nits with Auto-Brightness and Adaptive Color disabled. Wi-Fi was connected to a network.  Tested with Windows 11 Version 10.0.22621.1485 (22H2).  Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors.

Testing conducted by Microsoft in August 2022 using preproduction software and preproduction Intel®12th Gen Core™ i5, 256GB, 8GB RAM device. Testing consisted of full battery discharge with a mixture of active use and modern standby.  The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing eight popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150 nits with Auto-Brightness and Adaptive Color disabled.  Wi-Fi was connected to a network.  Tested with Windows Version 11.0.22621 (21H2).  Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors.    

Surface Pro 9 with 5G SQ® 3, 128/256/512GB, 8/16GB RAM 

Wi-Fi: Up to 19 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage.

Testing consisted of full battery discharge with a mixture of active use and modern standby. The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150nits with Auto-Brightness disabled. LTE enabled and device connected to LTE Network. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in airplane mode.

Testing conducted by Microsoft in November 2017 using preproduction device. Testing consisted of full battery discharge during video playback. All settings were default except: LTE enabled and device connected to LTE Network. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in airplane mode and Auto-Brightness disabled. 

Surface Pro X

Up to 15 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage.

Wi-Fi was connected to a network. Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors.

Testing conducted by Microsoft in August 2021 using preproduction Surface Slim Pen 2 and Surface Pro 8 units and software using automated equipment. Testing consisted of Surface Slim Pen 2 directly in contact with the screen and consisted of inking and hovering with default settings. Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors.
