Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010 directly support the ablity to save in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).

 Microsoft Word 2003 and earlier do not directly support conversion from Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF is the format in which documents are saved for viewing and exchange in the Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat Exchange for Windows.

To convert a PDF document from Adobe Acrobat Reader to Microsoft Word, use one of the following methods appropriate for your version of Adobe Acrobat Reader:

Adobe Reader version 9.x and X

To copy text from a PDF file to Word, follow these steps:  
  1. Open a PDF file in Adobe Reader.
  2. By default the Select Tool is selected allowing you to select any range of text in the PDF
  3. Select all the text in the PDF file that you want to copy, or click Select All(Ctrl+A) on the Edit menu to select all the text of a single page, and then click Copy (Ctrl+C) on the Edit menu. To select everything in the file click the Edit menu and click Copy file to Clipboard.
  4. Switch to Word, click the location where you want to paste the text, and then click Paste(Ctrl+V) on the Home tab in the Clipboard group.
To copy a graphic or image from the file, follow these steps:  
  1. Open the PDF file in Adobe Reader.
  2. Click the image you want to copy to select it.
  3. Right click on the image and click Copy Image (Ctrl+C).
  4. Switch to Word, click the location where you want to paste the image, and then click Paste(Ctrl+V) on the Home tab in the Clipboard group.
Adobe also offers a PDF to Word converter via the web. An interface to do this is also included in Adobe Acrobat Reader X.

Notes about Adobe Acrobat Reader

Text pasted from Adobe Acrobat Reader retains its character level formatting (for example, fonts, bold, italic, underline, color). However, some reformatting of the text after you paste it into Microsoft Word is may be required.

If security has been set in a PDF file, you may not be able to select and copy the contents of the PDF document for use in Word.
