HD Audio devices and audio options may disappear after you restart or resume Windows 8

Symptoms

When you restart or resume a computer that is running Windows 8, High Definition Audio (HD Audio) devices may disappear. Additionally, audio options may not be listed in the Sound item in Control Panel.
