Internet Explorer Incorrectly Displays Web Pages


Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 may be not able to display a page according to the Web page's Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), and you may also receive several scripting error messages when you open a Web page or use any scripted functionality on that Web page.


This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The Advanced setting Do not save encrypted pages to disk is selected.
  • The Web page uses the HTTPS protocol.
  • You have turned on HTTP compression for .css and .js files on the Web server.


Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, turn off HTTP compression for .css and .js files, or click to clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk in the Internet Options advanced settings.

Turn off HTTP Compression

To turn off HTTP compression, follow these steps:
  1. Start IIS Manager.
  2. Expand the local computer, right-click the Web Sites folder, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Service tab.
  4. In the HTTP compression area, click to clear the Compress application files check box.
  5. Click to clear the Compress static filescheck box.
  6. Click Apply, and then click

Change Internet Explorer Advanced Settings

Click to clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk check box. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Click to clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk check box.
  5. Click Apply, and then click


Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.
