RAPID PUBLISHING ARTICLES PROVIDE INFORMATION DIRECTLY FROM WITHIN THE MICROSOFT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN IS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO EMERGING OR UNIQUE TOPICS, OR IS INTENDED SUPPLEMENT OTHER KNOWLEDGE BASE INFORMATION.

Action

You have Team Foundation Server 2005 SP1.  You try to connect from Visual Studio 2005 with Team Explorer Version 8.0.50727.762.

Result

You get the following error:

TF31002: Unable to connect to the Team Foundation Server: <Server_name>.
The team Foundation Server Url: http://<server_name>:8080

Possible reasons for failure include:
The Team Foundation Server name, port number or protocol is incorrect
The Team Foundation server is offline
Password is expired or incorrect.

Cause

The machine.config file contained invalid information.

Resolution

To obtain a more descriptive error, we added the TFS Application tier server name and port to the Windows registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\TeamFoundation\Servers) and tried to connect.  When we tried to connect, we got this error:

TF31001 Team Foundation cannot retrieve the list of team projects from the Team Foundation Server SERVERNAME.  The Team Foundation Server returned the following error:
Configuration system failed to initialize.

The application event log for the client contained this error:
