Scenario 1:

During a clean installation of SBS 2008, you will receive the following error during setup if the network interface card (NIC) on the server is configured with a public IP address from DHCP:

"Cannot find the local network.

The server received an IP address from the Internet. You must have a hardware router between the server and the internet."

Scenario 2:

If you are migrating from an existing domain using the SBSAnswerFile.xml and the source server’s IP address is routable, you will receive the following error during setup:

"Invalid entry

The Source Server IP address cannot be a public IP address. Type a different Source Server IP address."

If the destination IP address is routable, you will receive the following error:

"Invalid entry

The Destination Server IP address cannot be a public IP address. Type a different Destination Server IP address."

Scenario 3:

If you are running SBS 2008 setup in advanced mode and manually configuring your network settings, you will receive the following error if you enter a public IP address for the default gateway:

"Invalid entry

The gateway IP address cannot be a public IP address. Type a different gateway IP address."

If you enter a public IP for the server, you get:

"Invalid entry

The Server IP address cannot be a public IP address. Type a different Server IP address."

Resolution

In any of these three scenarios, you must correct the IP address in question in order for setup to continue.  The IP address of the SBS 2008 server must be located in one of the following ranges.

10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

Advanced Steps

Scenario 1: Install SBS 2008 on a server receiving DHCP from a router assiging IP addresses in the routable ranges.

Scenario 2: Create an SBSAnswerFile.xml on the source server using the answer file creation tool, enter a routable IP address for the source and destination server. Take the answerfile to the destination server on a USB thumb drive, plug it into the destination server and run SBS 2008 setup to enter Migration mode. Once the network portion of setup launches, you will receive the error

Scenario 3: Create a blank SBSAnswerfile.xml on a USB thumb drive, plug it into the destination server and run SBS 2008 setup to enter advanced mode. Once the network portion of setup launches, you can manually configure network settings. If you choose a public IP for either the default gateway or the server, you will get the error.

More Information

This is by design. SBS 2008 must be installed with a single network interface card (NIC) on a private network behind an IPv4 router configured to perform NAT (Network Address Translation). The networking portion of setup will only accept a private IP address assigned to the default gateway, source server’s NIC, or destination server’s NIC.

Acceptable IP addresses include those in the following ranges as defined by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA):

10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255
