Action

Attempted to run the SourceSafe ss paths command line.

e.g.

ss paths  "$/project/filet.txt"

or in the SourceSafe Explorer right click on the file and select properties and choose the paths tab.

Result

Error reported:  File "path to file" not found

e.g. File "<\\machine\vssdb\VSS\data\t\tyagaaaa>" not found

Cause

A branch record existed to files that are deleted and destroyed from the database, possibly the result of an archive and delete operation on a branched file.

Resolution

For SourceSafe 6.0:

Run Datawiz. Datawiz is a beta level utility design to clean up orphan branches.

Follow this link to download Datawiz:

Datawiz

After downloading the tool, follow these steps to run it:

1. Double click on the DataWizard.exe icon to start DataWiz.
2. If your database doesn't appear in the first drop down, use the second drop down to specify the path to the srcsafe.ini file for the database you are going to get a report from.
3. Check "Do NOT run analyze". This will greatly improve performance.
4. Please choose to use 4 threads.
5. In the queries list, expand the drop down and choose "All queries."
6. Click finish.

Datawiz can run against a live database while users are logged into the database.

Once the DataWiz has completed, there should be a subfolder of the VSS DataWiz install folder named with today's date. It produces a report of errors in the datawiz log, and a batch file to correct the errors, fixdata.bat. Before running the correcting batch file, lock down the database and copy the extracted fixref zip file and into the directory the batch file is running from. We recommend you make a backup copy of your database before running FixData.bat. Rerun datawiz until it has a clean report.

For SourceSafe 2005:

Run Analyze -F -V4 to clean up orphan branches.  The VSS 2005 Analyze includes Datawiz, so you do not have to run the DataWiz utility like one did in VSS 6.0.
