Action

Using the ss checkin line command you attempt to check in a file from a specified location that is not the working directory.

Result

You receive an error message that may include one of the following:

<path\file name> is not valid SourceSafe syntax

Invalid DOS Path: <path\file name>

File <path\file name> not found.

or

<path\filename> is not an existing filename or project

Resolution

Use the -GL  switch with SS Checkin  command.

The examples below check in the text.txt file from a specified a UNC path:

ss checkin $/project1/test.txt -gl\\server_name\temp

and if the UNC path contains a space

ss checkin $/project1/test.txt -gl"\\server_name\folder name"

The examples below check in the text.tx file from a  specified drive letter location:

ss checkin $/project1/test.txt -glc:\temp

and for drive locations that contain spaces

ss checkin $/project1/test.txt -gl"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8"

Note that the path following the -gl switch does not explicitly include the file name being checked in only the location.

More Information

The -GL switch tells VSS what folder to check in the file from.

You may need to set the ssdir environment variable to point to the SourceSafe database you wish to run the line command against before running the check in command.
