Symptom

Expression Media 2 for Macintosh cannot import Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2003 (PPT) or Microsoft Excel 97-2003 (XLS) files. Additionally, there will not be any indication about the failure in Action log. However Expression Media 2 can import other Microsoft Office file formats such as Word 97-2003 (DOC), Word 2007 (DOCX), PowerPoint 2007 (PPTX), and Excel 2007 (XLSX).

Cause

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Expression Media. It is currently under investigation.

Resolution

To work around this problem, follow these steps to manually add PPT and XLS file extensions in custom importer file called "custom.txt".
  1. Close Expression Media 2 if it's already open.
  2. On the Go menu, click Applications.
  3. Open Expression Media 2 Folder.
  4. Control+click on the application file called "Expression Media 2" and click "Show Package Contents" on context menu.
  5. Browse through following folders, Contents : Resources : English.lproj : Plug-ins : Importers.
  6. Double click on Custom.txt file.
  7. Scroll to bottom of Custom.txt file. You need to add one line for each file type you want to add. The format of the line is - XXXX|N|Description
  8. Type "PPT" as file type and "6" as Media ID and type a file type description, for example, "PowerPoint presentation 97-2003".
  9. Press ‘Enter’ to begin a new line.
  10. On the new line type "XLS" as file type and "6" as Media ID and type a file type description for example, "Excel Worksheet 97-2003".
  11. Press ‘Enter’ to begin a new blank line.
Note: To make an entry valid, the text formatting is important in custom.txt.
    • File extensions with up to four characters can be entered in custom.txt. So if you're entering a file extension with three characters such as PPT, the fourth character should be entered as blank space. For example, when entering PPT extension in custom.txt, make sure to put an extra space after the file type, before the pipe symbol, So the whole line will be,
          XLS |6|Excel Worksheet 97-2003
          PPT |6|Powerpoint presentation 97-2003
    • Press Enter to create a blank line after the last entry.
  12. Save and close Custom.txt file.
  13. Open Expression Media 2.
  14. Click Catalog Importers on File menu. Make sure PPT and XLS extensions are available in the list.

You will now be able to import PPT and XLS files.

    More Information

You can catalog file types that are not supported by Expresion Media by editing the custom catalog importer file called custom.txt as shown above. However, it won’t be able to generate actual thumbnails of the files on Thumbnail view or render preview on Media view. Expression Media will display a generic icon for non-supported files that were enabled via custom.txt file.

On Windows system the custom.txt file is found in the following location -

    <Drive>\Program Files\Microsoft Expression\Media 2\Plug-ins\Importers

You need to add one line for each filetype you want to add. The format of the line is -

    XXXX|N|Description

Where XXXX is the filetype you want to add. N is the media type as seen in Expression Media and is a number from 0 to 6. The numbers and there meanings are 0-Image, 1-Audio, 2-Animation, 3-Vector, 4-DTP, 5-Font and 6-Text. 'Description' is what will appear in the 'Catalog Importers' dialog for this media type and is a simple text description of the type.
