Application might crash and encounter a System.NullReferenceException exception in the .NET Framework 4 if the CorrelationManager.LogicalOperationStack property is used

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a Microsoft .NET Framework 4-based application that uses the System.Diagnostics.CorrelationManager.LogicalOperationStack property.
  • You run the application to trace events while multiple threads run.
  • The application calls the CorrelationManager.LogicalOperationStack.Peek method.

In this scenario, the application might crash and encounter a System.NullReferenceException exception. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

This issue occurs because of an error in the common language runtime (CLR).

When the System.Runtime.Remoting.MessagingLogicalCallContext class in the CLR uses a CorrelationManager object, the CLR does not make a deep copy of the object. However, the reference to the CorrelationManager object might be used in another thread. Therefore, a System.NullReferenceException exception might be generated when multiple threads access a CorrelationManager object.
