When you use the Get Connected Wizard to establish a new partnership in ActiveSync, the COM1 communications port may be unavailable.

This issue can occur if COM1 is disabled in the computer's BIOS settings, or if Palm Desktop Services is running.

If Palm Desktop Services is running, it is actively listening on the COM1 port for a dock signal from a palm device. When ActiveSync attempts to listen on the same port, it sees the port in use.

If the COM1 port is disabled, enable it with the default settings in your computer's BIOS settings. To view or modify the BIOS settings, consult your computer's documentation or contact your computer's manufacturer.

If Palm Desktop Services is installed, uninstall it:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Palm Desktop Services in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. Follow the instructions to completely remove the program.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Run the ActiveSync Get Connected Wizard again. COM1 should be available for use.
