Enable sound recording for your LifeChat headset

Symptoms

You cannot use the microphone on your Microsoft LifeChat headset to record sound.

Cause

This issue occurs because the LifeChat headset is not set as the default recording device or the mute button has been pressed on the inline cable (which is available on some LifeChat models, such as the LX-3000).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, verify that the microphone is not muted, and then set the LifeChat headset as the default recording device. To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1: Unmute the LifeChat microphone by using the mute button on the cable (available on some models)

Locate the control box on the cable that has the volume and the mute controls, and toggle the mute button off.



If this does not resolve this issue, set the LifeChat headset as the default recording device. To do this, follow these steps:

Step 2. Install the LifeChat software

  1. Download the software for LifeChat. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site for the latest version:
  2. Make sure that you select the appropriate device and operating system when you download the software.
  3. Install the LifeChat software.
  4. Restart the computer if you are prompted.

Step 3. Set the microphone as the default device

Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Connect the LifeChat device to a USB port.

    Note Do not use port replicators, USB hubs, KVM switches or other such software.
    • For LifeChat ZX-6000

      Press the Connect button on the LifeChat one time. The green light must begin to blink. Press the Connect button on the LifeChat one more time.
    • For other LifeChat models

      Connect the LifeChat device to the line-in connection.
  2. Open Control Panel, and then click Sound.
  3. On the Recording tab, click your LifeChat model, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Run, type mmsys.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Audio tab.
  3. In the Sound recording section, click to select your LifeChat model, and the set it as the Default Device.
  4. Click OK, and then try to use the headset again. If the issue has not been resolved, go to step 5.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type mmsys.cpl, and then click OK.
  6. On the Audio tab, click to select the Use only default devicescheck box, and then click OK.

Step 4. Adjust the volume for the microphone

Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Click StartStart button , type mmsys.cplin the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. In the Recording tab, click Microphone, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Custom tab, click to clear Microphone - 20dB.
  4. In the Levels tab, adjust the volume slider to the level that you want, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK to confirm the sound settings.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Run, type mmsys.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. In the Volume tab, adjust the volume slider to the level that you want, and then click OK.
