About this update

This article describes a new "End of Life" upgrade notification feature that was delivered in the January 12, 2016, cumulative security update for each of the following Internet Explorer configurations:
 

  • On Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition
     

    • Internet Explorer 10

    • Internet Explorer 9

    • Internet Explorer 8

  • On Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition
     

    • Internet Explorer 10

    • Internet Explorer 9

    • Internet Explorer 8

Note For environments in which the migration to Internet Explorer 11 is incomplete, you can disable the notification feature by configuring a registry key. To do this, see the "More information" section.

To apply this feature, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer through Microsoft Update. Additionally, see the technical information about the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.

How to disable the notification feature

To disable the notification feature in Internet Explorer, follow these steps.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restorationin case problems occur.


 

For x86-based systems

  1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click OK.

  2. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  3. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.

  4. Enter FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, and then press Enter to name the new key.

  5. Right-click FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  6. Enter iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new value.

  7. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.

  8. In the Value data box, enter 1, and then click OK.

  9. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the browser to enable the new key.

Note If the value of the iexplore.exe registry entry is 0, or if the registry entry doesn't exist, the notification feature is enabled by default.
 

For x64-based systems

  1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click OK.

  2. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  3. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.

  4. Enter FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, and then press Enter to name the new key.

  5. Right-click FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  6. Enter iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new value.

  7. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.

  8. In the Value data box, enter 00000001, and then click OK.

  9. Locate the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  10. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.

  11. Enter FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, and then press Enter to name the new key.

  12. Right-click FEATURE_DISABLE_IE11_SECURITY_EOL_NOTIFICATION, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  13. Enter iexplore.exe, and then press Enter to name the new value.

  14. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.

  15. In the Value data box, enter 00000001, and then click OK.

  16. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the browser to enable the new key.

Note If the value of the iexplore.exe registry entry is 0, or if the registry entry doesn't exist, the notification feature is enabled by default.
