You receive an "Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server" error message in Outlook 2002

This article applies to the use of Outlook with MSN, the Microsoft Network, POP3 and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail servers. This article does not apply is you are using MSN6 Explorer.

NOTE: If you install and run MSN Explorer version 6, your MSN POP3 e-mail account will be migrated to an MSN Hotmail account. If you have Outlook and Outlook Express configured for POP3, you will no longer receive your new MSN e-mail messages.

If you are connected to the Internet through MSN, the Microsoft Network, and you attempt to send messages by using an account other than your MSN e-mail account, you receive a prompt for your logon credentials for the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail server. If you click the OK button, you receive the logon prompt again. If you click Cancel, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
Task '<SMTP server name> - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042109): 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

This behavior can occur because MSN does not allow messages to be sent to another SMTP server while you are connected to their network.

To work around this behavior, create a new profile to use when sending e-mail via the MSN SMTP server. To ensure the new profile is created and configured properly, please see the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
