Printer uses the wrong tray when both letter size and A4 size are available in Excel

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, when you print to a multiple-tray laser printer, the paper may be drawn from the wrong tray even though the correct tray is specified in Page Setup. Your printout may also be resized according to the paper size in your second paper tray.

For example, assume that you have two trays, with letter-size paper in one tray and A4-size paper in the other tray, and then you follow these steps in Microsoft Excel 2002 or in Microsoft Office Excel 2003:
  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then select Letter in the Paper Size box.
  2. On the File menu, click Print.
The printer resizes and prints your print job using the A4-size paper, even though you selected Letter in the Paper Size box.

Cause

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You have a multiple-tray laser printer configured with letter-size paper in one tray, and A4-size paper in the second tray.
  • The printer Tray Selection Paper Source setting is set to Automatically Select.
  • On the International tab (click Options on the Tools menu), the Allow A4/Letter paper resizing check box is selected.

Workaround

To work around this problem, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of Excel that you are running.

Excel 2002 or Excel 2003

  1. Start Excel, and then click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the International tab, and then click to clear the Allow A4/Letter paper resizing check box.
  3. Click OK.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
  2. Click the the Advanced tab.
  3. In the General section, click to clear the Scale content to A4 or 8.5x11" paper sizes check box, and then click OK.
