Error Message When You Try to Add a New Local User to a Computer That Is a Domain Member

Symptoms

When you use the Add New User Wizard under User Accounts in Control Panel to add a local user to a computer that is a member of a domain, you may receive the following error message:

The user computer name\new username could not be granted Standard user access because computer name\new username does not exist.

Cause

  • In Control Panel, click User Accounts, click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced to start the Local Users and Groups snap-in.
  • Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then browse to Local Users and Groups.
