Numbers do not appear on the screen when you use the numeric keypad

Symptoms

When you use the numeric keypad to type numbers, the numbers do not appear on the screen.

Cause

This behavior may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • In the System.ini file, the device=*enable check box is selected.
  • In Accessibility Options, the Use Mouse Buttons check box is selected.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, try method 1 first. If that does not work, try method 2.

Method 1: Turn Off the Device=*enable Setting

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click the System.ini tab.
  3. Click to clear the device=*enable check box, click Apply, and then click Close.
  4. When you are prompted, restart the computer.
  5. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  6. Double-click Accessibility Options.
  7. Reset the accessibility options as you prefer. (The options may have been modified by this procedure.)
Note If method 1 does not resolve the issue, use method 2.

Method 2: Turn Off the Mouse Keys Setting

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Accessibility Options.
