"DHCP server is unreachable" error message when you use the DHCP New Scope Wizard to define a range of IP addresses for a scope

Symptoms

When you run the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) New Scope Wizard to define a range of IP addresses for a scope, the scope is not enabled after you click to select the Yes, I want to activate this scope now check box and then close the wizard. Client computers that request a DHCP address receive the following error message:
The following error occurred when renewing adapter, where adapter is the network interface card on the computer adapter: DHCP Server is unreachable.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a problem with the DHCP Scope Wizard.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, re-create the scope, and then manually enable the scope after you click to select the No, I will activate this scope later check box in the DHCP Scope Wizard. Or, manually deactivate and then reactivate the DHCP scope. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click DHCP.
  3. Click the DHCP scope that you created.
  4. Right-click the scope, and then click Deactivate.
  5. Right-click the scope, and then click Activate.

More Information

You must enable a scope to make it available to clients and to start distribution of IP leases. Do not enable a scope until you have specified all required options. Do not disable a scope unless you are retiring it permanently from use on your network.
