Summary

This step-by-step article describes how to use a Norton Ghost image to create a Virtual PC 4.0 hard disk image.

More Information

To create a Virtual PC 4.0 hard disk image using a Norton Ghost image, follow these steps:

Note You must have administrator credentials and a Microsoft Windows 2000-based host computer.
  1. Copy the Norton Ghost image to a hard disk or to a volume (partition) that does not contain Virtual PC.
  2. Use the Virtual Disk Wizard to create a virtual hard disk image. To do so, follow these steps:

Important To complete this procedure, you must have more free space on the disk where you store the disk image than the size of the disk that you want to create the image of.
    1. Click Start, point to
Programs, and then click Connectix Virtual PC.
    2. On the File menu, click
      Virtual Disk Wizard.
    3. Click Next, click Create new floppy or hard disk image, and then click Next.
    4. Click Create hard disk image, and then click Next.
    5. Click Browse, and then locate the disk where you want to save the disk image.
    6. Click Save, and then click
      Next.
    7. In the Virtual Disk Wizard - Virtual PC dialog box, take any one of the following steps:
      • If you want to create an image from a hard disk that contains more than one volume, click Disk image linked to a host physical drive.
      • If you want to create an image from a single volume, or a hard disk that contains only one volume, click Disk image linked to a host volume.
    8. In the Caution - Virtual PC dialog box, click OK if you want to continue, and then click Next.
    9. Select the volume that contains the Norton Ghost image that you want to create an image from, click Next, and then click Finish.
  3. Use the Virtual Disk Wizard again to create an expandable disk image. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to
Programs, and then click Connectix Virtual PC.
    2. On the File menu, click
      Virtual Disk Wizard.
    3. Click Next, click Create new floppy or hard disk image, and then click
      Next.
    4. Click Create hard disk image, and then click Next.
    5. Click Browse, and then locate the disk where you want to save the disk image.
    6. Click Save, and then click
      Next.
    7. In the Virtual Disk Wizard - Virtual PC dialog box, click Dynamically expanding disk image, and then click Next.
    8. In the Disk format list, select
      FAT32 (130557 MB maximum).
    9. In the Disk size box, type the disk size, and then click Next.

Note The available hard disk space on the host computer limits the actual hard disk image size. You can create a hard disk image that is larger than the available hard disk space on the host computer, but the hard disk image only expands to use the hard disk space that is available on the volume where you create the hard disk image.
    10. Read the "Hard Disk Creation Summary," and then click Finish.
    11. When the hard disk image is successfully created, click
      Close.
  4. Create a new Virtual PC. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to
Programs, and then click Connectix Virtual PC.
    2. On the File menu, click New PC, and then click Next.
    3. In the New PC name box, type the computer name, and then click Next.
    4. In the PC Setup Wizard - Virtual PC dialog box, click Create a default PC, and then click
      Next two times.
    5. Click Finish.
    6. In the PC Settings forcomputer name dialog box, select Hard Disk 1, and then click Hard disk image file.
    7. Click Browse, and then locate the expandable disk image that you created in Step 3.
    8. Select the expandable disk image, and then click
      Open.
    9. In the PC Settings forcomputer name dialog box, select Hard Disk 2, and then click Hard disk image file.
    10. Click Browse, and then locate the virtual hard disk image that you created in Step 2.
    11. Select the virtual hard disk image, and then click
      Open.
    12. Click OK.
  5. Start the newly created virtual machine off the floppy disk that contains the Ghostpe.exe file, and restore the Ghost image from the D drive to the C drive.

Note You can unmount the D drive after the virtual machine restarts the first time because you do not need the D drive after you copy the Norton Ghost image to the C drive.
