Symptoms

When you try to install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Notification Services or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Notification Services Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may notice a message that is similar to one of the following in the InstallShield Wizard Completed dialog box:

Message 1

The wizard was interrupted before Microsoft SQL Server Notification Services could be completely installed.

Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.

Message 2

The wizard was interrupted before Microsoft SQL Server Notification Services 2.0 SP1 could be completely installed.

Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.

Note You may receive the message even when the user is a local administrator on the computer.

Cause

This problem occurs when both of the following conditions are true:
  • The DefaultAccessPermissions binary value exists under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Oleregistry key.
  • The user account that has logged on to the computer to install SQL Server 2000 Notification Services does not have default access permissions for Distributed Component Object Module (DCOM) applications.

Note By default, the DefaultAccessPermission binary value does not exist under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole registry key. The DefaultAccessPermission binary value is created when you run certain applications or when you configure the default access permissions of DCOM applications by using the Component Services tool.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  2. Provide DCOM default access permissions to the user or to the group that is used to install SQL Server 2000 Notification Services. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click
      Run.
    2. In the Open box, type
      Dcomcnfg.exe.
    3. If the operating system that is running on the computer is Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, follow these steps:
      1. In the left pane of the Component Services window, expand Component Services, and then expand Computers.
      2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
      3. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click the Default COM Security tab.
      4. Under the Access Permissions group, click
        Edit Default.
      5. Add the user account, and then select the Allow check box for Access Permission.
      6. Click OK in the Access Permission dialog box. Click OK in the My Computer Properties dialog box.

Note You may have to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
If the operating system that is running on the computer is Microsoft Windows 2000, follow these steps:
      1. In the Distributed COM Configuration Properties dialog box, click the Default Security tab.
      2. Under the Default Access Permissions group, click Edit Default.
      3. Add the user account, and then select the Allow Access check box for Type of Access.
      4. Click OK in the Registry Value Permissions dialog box. Click OK in the Distributed COM Configuration Properties dialog box.
