You encounter unexpected behavior when you perform tasks as a standard user and the User Account Control feature is disabled in Windows Vista

Symptoms

You log on to Windows Vista as a standard user and then you try to perform one of the following actions:

  • You right-click a program or a task and then click Run as administrator.
  • You start a program or a task that usually requires elevated administrator permissions to continue.
When you perform either of these actions, the task may not be completed successfully, and unexpected behavior may occur. The unexpected behavior may include the following:


  • The User Account Control window does not appear as expected. You are not prompted for the administrator password to continue.
  • You do not receive an error message that states that you do not have sufficient permissions to perform the action.

Cause

This issue may occur if a user who has administrator rights and permissions turns off the User Account Control feature. If you log on as a user who has standard rights and permissions and if the User Account Control feature has been turned off, a task runs by using standard user permissions, even if you try to run the task by using the Run as administrator option.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps to turn on the User Account Control feature.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Log on to Windows Vista as a user who has administrator rights and permissions.
  2. Click StartStart button , and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click User Accounts, and then click Turn User Account Control on or off.



    Note In some versions of Windows Vista, User Accounts and Family Safety does not appear. Instead, click User Accounts, click User Accounts, and then click Turn User Account Control on or off.

    User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  4. Click to select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. When you are prompted, restart the computer.
After you follow these steps, the User Account Control window appears when any user tries to perform a task that requires elevated administrative rights and permissions.
