Error message that you receive after you configure Windows Media Center without connecting to the Internet: "No Tuner Available"

Consider the following scenario. You have a Windows Vista-based computer that is using an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) tuner or an Open Cable Unidirectional Receiver (OCUR) tuner. The computer is not connected to the Internet. You run the Windows Media Center Custom setup option. During Setup, when you are prompted to answer whether you have an "Always on" Internet connection, you click No. Then, you click No Internet Access. When you are asked if you want to use the Guide, you click No. In this scenario, when you try to watch Live TV, you receive the following error message:

No Tuner Available.
No TV tuner cards are configured to work with Windows Media Center. Go to TV Settings and setup your TV signal.

This issue occurs because you must download the Guide to complete the configuration of the tuner. During Setup, the Guide data provides necessary information to the tuner about the correct frequencies and channel information.

Note You must have an Internet connection to download the Guide.

To resolve this issue, provide a temporary Internet connection to the computer. Then, run Windows Media Center Setup again. To run Setup again, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Media Center.
  2. Click Tasks, and then click Settings.
  3. Click TV, and then click Set Up TV Signal.
  4. When you are notified that changing TV signal settings will interrupt recording, click Yes.
  5. On the Set Up Your TV Signal screen, click Next.
  6. Verify that the correct region is selected, click Yes, use this region to configure TV services, and then click Next.
  7. Click Configure my TV signal automatically, and then click Next.
  8. Verify that the TV signal configuration settings are correct, click Yes, and then click Next.
  9. Click Set Up Guide listings, and then click Next two times.
  10. On the Guide Privacy screen, click Yes, and then click Next.
  11. If you agree to the Guide Terms of Service, click I agree, and then click Next.

Note To continue, you must click I agree to accept the Guide Terms of Service.
  12. Click Manual download, and then click Next two times.
  13. When you are prompted, type your ZIP Code or Postal Code, and then click Next.
  14. If you are prompted, verify your signal provider, and then click Next.

Note After Windows Media Center has downloaded the Guide, the Internet connection is no longer required.
  15. Follow the remaining steps to complete Setup. You may have to restart Windows Media Center.

More Information

After you connect to the Internet and follow the steps in the "Resolution" section, Windows Media Center will have program guide information for two weeks. After two weeks, you can still use the ATSC or OCUR tuner. However, you cannot update Guide information without an Internet connection. When you try to use the Guide, you may receive the following error message:

No Data Available
You may move the computer from the ZIP Code or Postal Code region where you first connected to the Internet to configure your ATSC tuner. If you do this, you must reconnect to the Internet and perform the steps in the "Resolution" section again to reconfigure the TV tuner. Also, you must reconnect to the Internet to download changes to the channel lineup.
