error message

Additionally, errors that resemble the following are logged in the SharePoint ULS logs:

Cause

This issue occurs after you install the spPowerPivot.msi file from one of the following cumulative updates to your SharePoint 2013 farm servers:

  • Cumulative Update 6 for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 3
  • Cumulative Update 7 for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 3
  • Cumulative Update 10 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1
  • Cumulative Update 3 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2

Workaround

Important If you have not applied one of the cumulative updates that are listed in the "Cause" section, we recommend that you do not install them currently. Instead, we recommend that you wait for a future cumulative update to fix this issue.

To temporarily work around this issue until we release a fix, follow these steps.

Note Only implement this workaround if you have applied the spPowerPivot.msi from one of the SQL Cumulative Updates listed in the "Cause" section to your SharePoint 2013 farm.

  1. Go to the following file location on your SharePoint servers:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\PowerPivot"

  2. Create a backup of the "ManageDataRefresh.aspx" file.
  3. Open the "ManageDataRefresh.aspx" file.
  4. Find the following code:

  5. <tr>
       <td colspan="2" style="height:20px;vertical-align:middle;">
          <asp:Label style="margin:5px;" ID="Literal3" runat="server" Text="<%$Resources:PowerPivot_Pages, DataRefresh_Warning_DataSources%>" />
       </td>
    </tr>

    Replace the code with the following code:

     <%--
        <tr>
            <td colspan="2" style="height:20px;vertical-align:middle;">
               <asp:Label style="margin:5px;" ID="Literal3" runat="server" Text="<%$Resources:PowerPivot_Pages, DataRefresh_Warning_DataSources %>" />
            </td>
        </tr>
     --%>
  6. Save the file.
  7. Perform an IISReset on the server.
  8. Test the results after every server is changed.

More information

This issue is specific to PowerPivot for SharePoint Server 2013 and the SQL Server cumulative updates that are listed in the "Cause" section. This issue should not affect any other products or Analysis Services stand-alone installations. This issue seems to be limited to the PowerPivot add-in for SharePoint (spPowerPivot.msi) that is included together with the cumulative update installer.

The following blog post will be frequently updated to add new information about this issue as it becomes available:
