This feature applies to each document. It can't be disabled on the application level.
There may be situations in which you want to have AutoSave disabled by default without having to disable it in each document. For example, you may want to disable AutoSave if the document versioning feature is disabled in the hosting document library. This would prevent file changes from being automatically saved while you are unable to restore an earlier document version.

To disable AutoSave through the Windows registry, add a DWORD value of 1 to each of the following registry subkeys for the indicated Office 2016 ProPlus (Subscription) application:
- Microsoft Word:
- Microsoft Excel:
- Microsoft PowerPoint:
The DWORD value of 1 disables AutoSave.
