Configuring RWA domain before using the Domain Configuration Wizard

What does this guide do?

Prepare you to run the Domain Configuration Wizard for Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials, and Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials. This includes guidance about the options for obtaining the domain and certificate, and about the manual steps you must take before you run the Domain Configuration Wizard.

Use the Domain Configuration Wizard to register your Internet domain and to configure the domain for your server

By using the Domain Configuration Wizard, you can register professional domains and Windows Live domains. See the following table for help in choosing your domain.

Was your certificate bought through the Domain Configuration Wizard for the following versions of Windows?
  • Windows Small Business Server 2008
  • Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard.
  • Windows Home Server 2011
  • Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials
  • Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials
You will be required to buy a certificate when you run the wizard

Start the Domain Configuration Wizard. During this process, you will be prompted to buy a certificate through the provider’s website for your domain. Follow the guidance in the wizard to buy the certificate. We recommend that you get your credit card ready before running the wizard.

You must use a workaround to complete the Domain Configuration Wizard

This scenario is not supported. Choose other options, or use the following workaround to configure your certificate: Manually Install an Existing SSL Cert .

You are ready

You are ready to use the Domain Configuration Wizard. Use the information in the wizard to configure your domain and certificate, and then the wizard will import the certificate to your server.

  • If you choose the Windows Live domain, the Microsoft Live Domain service will assign you a dynamic IP address, and a certificate will be automatically generated for the domain.
  • If you choose a manufactory domain, the manufactory will provide an IP address and a certificate for you; please read the manufactory’s manual about this.
  • If you choose the Go Daddy or eNomCentral domain, with a certificate from previous versions of Windows Home Server or Small Business Server, your domain/certificate will be supported by the wizard; no additional work is needed.

Now you are ready to log on to the server Dashboard and launch the Domain Configuration Wizard.

The Domain Configuration Wizard doesn’t support your domain name

There are two ways to resolve this problem: reuse the existing domain by manually configuring it, or transfer the domain to eNomCentral or Go Daddy. See the following table for a comparison of these methods.

Before you run the Domain Configuration Wizard, you must buy a certificate for your domain.

After your buy your certificate, you can manually configure your domain by selecting Set up my domain name manually on the Set up your domain name page of the wizard.

Transfer the domain to eNomCentral or Go Daddy.

Follow the steps in the Domain Configuration Wizard to transfer your domain to eNomCentral or Go Daddy. Then, follow the steps in the wizard to buy a certificate for your domain from eNomCentral or Go Daddy.

The Domain Configuration Wizard doesn’t support your domain name

You can manually configure your domain by selecting Set up my domain name manually on the Set up your domain name page in the wizard.

Transfer the domain

Follow the steps in the Domain Configuration Wizard to transfer your domain to eNomCentral or Go Daddy. Then, if you want to use the certificate you already have, use the guidance on the following Microsoft website:

You can also buy a new certificate for your domain from eNomCentral or Go Daddy by following the guidance in the Domain Configuration Wizard.

The Domain Configuration Wizard doesn’t support your domain name

You must transfer your domain and then buy a new certificate. To transfer your domain to eNomCentral or Go Daddy, follow the steps in the Domain Configuration Wizard. To buy a new certificate from eNomCentral or Go Daddy, follow the wizard guidance.
