You receive a warning when you use the UUIDGEN.exe command or the UuidCreateSequential function on a computer that has a valid network adapter address

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003.
  • You install a network adapter that has a valid MAC address on this computer.
  • You run the following command on this computer.

    uuidgen /x

In this scenario, you receive the following warning message.
Warning: Unable to determine your network address. The UUID generated is unique on this computer only. It should not be used on another computer.
Additionally, you receive an RPC_S_UUID_LOCAL_ONLY error when you use the UuidCreateSequential function.

This issue occurs because the operating system incorrectly evaluates MAC addresses of modern network adapters, when the Physical Address does not start with 00, for example

Name [00000007] Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

   MAC Address A4:BA:DB:39:9C:84

Note the first octet of the Hardware address in this example is starting with A4-, therefor this hotfix with registry key EnableUuidGenSupport value 1 is required.
