Minimal Download Strategy overview
Minimal Download Strategy (MDS) in SharePoint 2013 improves page rendering performance by rendering only the parts of the page which have changed. These changed portions are known as deltas. MDS improves end-user experience by downloading only the page deltas. This results in more fluid page transition.
MDS is a site-scoped feature. You can determine whether a site has MDS enabled by looking at the URL. An MDS-enabled site has a _layouts/15/start.aspx page in the URL followed by a hash mark (#) and the relative URL of the requested resource. Developers who build solutions on SharePoint 2013 should take advantage of MDS when it is possible.
When MDS is implemented, there are two pages involved: the start.aspx and the relative URL page of the requested resource. Developers typically use MDS by putting their controls in SharePoint:AjaxDelta tags. HTML regions and controls are MDS compatible only if they are wrapped in SharePoint:AjaxDelta tags, and the assembly or control is marked with the MdsCompliantAttribute.
